I read an article lately that suggested the role of a Martial Arts class (and Instructor) is to teach Martial Arts - not fitness. The article claimed that class time should be purely focused on learning the technical aspect of an art and all fitness work should be done in a students own time.
I think that's a nice idea...but not very practical!
Fitness is absolutely crucial to success in almost every Martial Art. It allows you to improve performance in almost every aspect: strength, speed and endurance being the most obvious. But it is also essential in Self-defence. Remember that often the first line of protecting yourself is the ability to know when to run away! If you can't do this you have already severely limited your safety.
Finally, in general terms, fitness helps us live healthy and full lives. This may sound cliched but when our bodies function correctly our minds do too and this reduces stress and improves our quality of life as a whole.
